Grow a business, step by step
Every field has a business you can start small and grow over the years. Start with your skill and a little money, learn the trade, then build a team. This page shows the basic, medium and high level business in each of the 21 fields.
Three levels of business
Most medium businesses grow out of a basic one, and most large companies grow out of a medium one. Grow into each level; do not jump to it.
Basic: Start small
- Size: One person or a family
- Experience: Little or none; a short course or a year working in the trade helps
- Money: Your own savings and family
- Papers: Udyam registration (free); FSSAI for food
Medium: Build a team
- Size: A team of 5 to 50 with its own premises
- Experience: 3 to 5 years in the trade, or a basic business that already runs well
- Money: Savings plus a partner or family investors
- Papers: State licences, GST, ISO, government vendor registration
High: Run a company
- Size: 50 or more staff, a plant or large contracts
- Experience: 5 to 10 years or more, and a proven record
- Money: Partners, investors and large working capital
- Papers: Industry approvals, tenders, export licences
How to climb the ladder
1. Work in the trade first
A year or two in someone else’s business teaches you prices, customers and mistakes to avoid. Your experience counts.
2. Start small, without debt
Use your savings and family money. Register on Udyam; it costs nothing. Halal ways to fund a business.
3. Grow with partners
To reach the medium and high levels, bring in partners who share profit and loss (musharakah) instead of taking interest-bearing loans.

Check the licence first
A pharmacy, security agency, solar business, food unit, recruiting agency or Hajj group needs a licence before you start. Read the rules on the official government website, never from an agent.
Interest-bearing loans
Many scheme loans carry interest. Use the free training and grants, fund the rest yourself or with partners, and ask a scholar before any loan. Money and Saving.

Serve the community
A business is a form of worship when it is honest: no interest, true weights and specifications, no hidden defects, wages paid on time, and zakat on the profit. That is open to every field, engineering included. Some businesses also fill a gap our community has. Here is one in each field.
| Field | Business that serves the community | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Healthcare and pharma | Women-staffed home care and sample collection; Hajj and Umrah health checks | Many women delay care when only male staff are available |
| Education and research | Tuition and NIOS centre for madrasa students | Joins deeni and dunyawi education |
| Manufacturing and production | Alcohol-free attar and perfumes; gelatin-free capsules | Buyers check ingredients and pay for trust |
| IT and software | Masjid and madrasa management software (fees, attendance, donation and zakat records) | Few good tools exist for this |
| Government and public service | Common Service Centre run as a documents-help desk | Certificates and scholarship papers are where youth get stuck |
| Construction and infrastructure | Design and build for masjids and madrasas (wudu areas, ventilation, women's sections, access for the elderly) | Steady demand; quality is often poor |
| Management, sales and HR | Recruitment agency that never charges candidates | Youth are cheated by agents who take fees |
| Defence and uniformed services | Physical and written-test academy run by ex-servicemen | Prepares community youth for the forces |
| Media, design and languages | Arabic and Urdu interpreting; Islamic children's books; calligraphy design | Gulf patients and traders need interpreters |
| Skilled trades and services | Yearly maintenance contracts for masjids; women technicians for women-only homes | Every masjid needs a reliable vendor |
| Banking, finance and accounts | Zakat and waqf accounting for trusts; interest-free credit cooperative | Clear records build trust; riba-free credit is scarce |
| Food, agriculture and animals | Hygienic halal meat and ready-to-cook products; organised Qurbani service | Trust and cleanliness are the selling points |
| Energy and power | Rooftop solar for masjids, madrasas and waqf buildings, often donor-funded as sadaqah jariyah | Masjids use power in the daytime, which suits solar |
| Logistics, trade and supply chain | Halal food export trading to the Gulf | Gulf links already exist |
| Electronics and telecom | Masjid sound and acoustic systems; prayer-time displays | Unclear khutbah audio is a common complaint |
| Data and analytics | Shariah screening of listed shares; reports for zakat funds | Investors and trusts need evidence |
| Legal and compliance | Waqf property papers; wills (wasiyyah) and inheritance shares | Waqf rules changed in 2025; inheritance disputes are common |
| Social sector and counselling | Pre-marriage and family counselling; career counselling in masjids | Rarely offered professionally |
| Hospitality, travel and aviation | Registered Hajj and Umrah group organiser; stays for Gulf medical visitors | Pilgrims are often cheated by unregistered operators |
| Automobile and EV | E-rickshaws leased to drivers on ijarah (lease-to-own, no interest) | Drivers own a vehicle without a riba loan |
| Work abroad (Gulf) | Pre-departure training centre (Arabic, work culture, trade tests) | Safer migration for the next worker |
Build these to earn, not to depend on charity budgets: masjids have little money, so the solar and maintenance ideas work because bill savings or donors pay for them. Hajj groups, recruiting agents, credit cooperatives and meat units need licences, and rules on halal certification differ by state. Ask a scholar about any finance model.
