What this field is

Repair technicians diagnose and fix hardware and software faults in phones, tablets and accessories — screens, charging ports, batteries and basic chip-level repairs.

Customers return to a technician they trust, so honesty and clear pricing build the business.

It suits you if:

  • You enjoy electronics and patient, careful work.
  • You want to run a small business.
  • You learn quickly from videos and practice.

How to start

  1. Learn basics: phone parts, safe disassembly and soldering.
  2. Join a certified course found on Skill India Digital, or apprentice with a trusted shop.
  3. Practise on old phones before customers’ devices.
  4. Buy tools gradually from savings.
  5. Start from a counter or a small shop; give written estimates and a short warranty.

Where it can lead

  1. Trainee — learning on old devices.
  2. Technician — in a shop or service centre.
  3. Senior technician — chip-level and board repairs.
  4. Own shop — repairs, accessories, and trainees of your own.

Honesty rules

  • Never look at or copy customers’ photos, messages or data.
  • Never replace parts with fakes while charging for originals.
  • Never charge for repairs you did not do.

Learn online, free

Online learning helps you understand. Only practice makes you skilled. Use free government lessons alongside your training.

  • Before you join: watch lessons on how a phone is put together and the common faults.
  • While you train: on Bharat Skills, use the Electronics Mechanic trade theory for the basics of circuits and testing.
  • After you qualify: follow new phone models online, but practise soldering and chip work on scrap boards under a trainer.

Can’t afford training?

Money should not stop you. These routes cost little or nothing:

  • Skill India (PMKVY): look for a short course such as Handset Repair Engineer at a Skill India centre near you, usually at no cost. Search on skillindiadigital.gov.in.
  • Government ITI: fees at government ITIs are very low, and many states give extra support. Choose the Electronics Mechanic trade.
  • Learn in a shop: working as a helper in a repair shop while you train teaches you quickly.

Applying costs nothing. Never pay an agent to get you into a government scheme.
