Architecture and Interior Design
Architects design buildings and towns; interior designers plan the spaces inside them. Both are professional degree careers — a five-year B.Arch for architects, and a three- or four-year degree for Interior Designers — with diploma and skill routes for those who need to start earning sooner.

What this field is
Architecture is a regulated profession. Only a person registered with the Council of Architecture (CoA) may legally call themselves an “architect” in India. You need a recognised B.Arch degree.
Interior design is a professional degree field: B.Sc Interior Design (3 years) or B.Des Interior Architecture (4 years). Interior designers plan layouts, furniture, lighting, colours and materials for homes, shops, offices and hotels. Alongside your degree, a strong portfolio of real work is what wins clients and jobs.
Both fields now run on software: AutoCAD for drawings, SketchUp, Revit and 3D rendering tools for designs. Draughtsmen and 3D visualisers who master these tools are hired by architects, builders and furniture firms — a way to earn while you study.
It suits you if:
- You enjoy drawing, sketching and imagining spaces.
- You notice how buildings and rooms look and work.
- You are patient with detail and like seeing a project finished.
- You can talk with clients and listen to what they need.
Routes, time and cost
| Route | Who it suits | Time | Leads to |
|---|---|---|---|
| B.Arch via NATA or JEE Main Paper 2 | 12th with Physics, Chemistry and Maths (50%), or a 10+3 diploma with Maths | 5 years | Registered architect; JoSAA counselling for NITs and SPAs through JEE |
| Diploma in Architecture Assistantship (polytechnic, where offered) | After 10th | 3 years | Architectural assistant or draughtsman |
| ITI Draughtsman (Civil) | After 10th | 2 years | Draughtsman with builders and architects; the cheapest door in |
| B.Des Interior Architecture (or interior / space design) via UCEED, NID DAT, NIFT or university exams | After 12th, any stream (check each exam) | 4 years | Interior architect or designer with studios, builders, retail and hospitality firms |
| B.Sc Interior Design | After 12th, any stream at most colleges | 3 years | Interior designer, site supervisor, 3D visualiser; M.Sc or M.Des later |
| Diploma in interior design | After 10th or 12th (varies by institute) | 1–2 years | Junior designer or design assistant |
| Software courses — AutoCAD, SketchUp, Revit, rendering | Anyone, including working youth | 2–6 months | Draughting and 3D jobs; strengthens every route above |
For B.Arch, choose only colleges approved by the Council of Architecture — check its list before paying. Interior design courses vary a lot in quality: ask to see student portfolios and placement records, not just brochures.
How to start
- Start a sketchbook now: draw buildings, rooms and objects around you every day.
- If you are in 11th–12th with PCM, read about NATA and JEE Main Paper 2 and try a past paper.
- If you cannot afford five years, take ITI Draughtsman (Civil) or a diploma and learn AutoCAD and SketchUp — then work and study further.
- Build a portfolio: drawings, 3D models, photos of real work you helped on.
- Spend time on real sites — see our Construction trades guide to understand how buildings are actually made.
Where it can lead
- Draughtsman, 3D visualiser or architecture student
- Junior architect or junior interior designer
- Project architect or senior designer
- Your own practice or design-and-build firm — see Services and agencies
Further study: M.Arch, M.Plan (urban and regional planning) and landscape architecture. Gulf mega-projects and Indian smart-city work hire architects, planners and CAD staff.
Be careful
- Never call yourself an “architect” without CoA registration — it is against the law.
- Never join a B.Arch college that is not on the CoA approved list.
- Never take a big interior contract without a written quote, drawings and a payment schedule.
- Never use copied designs from the internet as your own portfolio.
