What this field is
Construction trades build and repair everything around us: water lines and bathrooms (plumber), steel structures and pipelines (welder), walls and floors (mason), doors and furniture (carpenter), and reinforcement bars (steel fixer).
Most people start as helpers. A recognised certificate turns a helper into a skilled worker, and skilled workers earn more and are trusted with better jobs.
It suits you if:
- You like practical work and can handle physical effort.
- You need to earn soon and cannot study for years.
- You may want to work in the Gulf later.
Routes, time and cost
| Route | Who it suits | Time | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| ITI Welder (NCVT) | Class 8 pass, age 14+ | 1 year | Low at a government ITI |
| ITI Plumber, Mason or Carpenter | Usually 8th or 10th pass — check the trade | 1 year (most trades) | Low at a government ITI |
| Short course under Skill India | Anyone who needs to earn sooner | Weeks to a few months | Often free under government schemes |
| Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) | Workers already doing the job without a certificate | Short assessment | Usually free — gives you a certificate for skills you already have |
| Apprenticeship | After ITI, or on the job | Usually 1 year | Paid: at least ₹9,600 a month after ITI |
Already working as a helper? Ask about RPL. It certifies the skills you already have, often in days, and raises your pay and Gulf chances.
How to start
- Choose one trade: welding, plumbing, masonry, carpentry or steel fixing.
- Find a government ITI or a short course near you on Skill India Digital.
- Work as a helper alongside training to build experience.
- Take a paid apprenticeship through the Apprenticeship India portal.
- Keep a work log with photos (with permission) and references from supervisors.
- Add a higher skill — TIG/MIG welding, pipe fitting, or reading drawings — for better pay.
Where it can lead
- Helper — learning on site.
- Certified tradesman — ITI or RPL certificate, steady work.
- Foreman or site supervisor — leads a team, reads drawings.
- Subcontractor or contractor — takes your own jobs and hires others.
Gulf jobs usually need experience and a trade test. Apply only through licensed agents listed on eMigrate, and never pay an agent for a job.
Safety first
- Never weld without a helmet, gloves and proper ventilation.
- Never work at height without a harness.
- Never pay an agent for a Gulf job or a visa.
- Never skip safety shoes on a construction site.

Learn online, free
Online learning helps you understand. Only practice makes you skilled. Use free government lessons alongside your training.
- Before you join: watch lessons on the trade you are considering, such as plumbing, welding or masonry.
- While you train: on Bharat Skills, use the trade material for Plumber, Welder or Draughtsman (Civil) and do the mock tests.
- After you qualify: learn site safety and drawing reading online. Welding and work at height need a trainer.
Can’t afford training?
Money should not stop you. These routes cost little or nothing:
- Skill India (PMKVY): look for a short course such as Assistant Electrician, Mason or Bar Bender at a Skill India centre near you, usually at no cost. Search on skillindiadigital.gov.in.
- Government ITI: fees at government ITIs are very low, and many states give extra support. Welder, Plumber and Draughtsman trades take one to two years.
- Building workers’ welfare board: if a family member is a registered construction worker, your state board may support training or education. Ask at the labour office.
