What this field is
Security staff protect people and property: access control, patrols, CCTV monitoring, fire safety and emergency response.
Private security agencies must hold a licence under the Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act (PSARA), and guards must be trained before they are deployed.
It suits you if:
- You are physically fit, alert and disciplined.
- You need a job soon.
- You are comfortable with night shifts.
Routes, time and cost
| Route | Who it suits | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guard training at an authorised institute | Most new guards | From about a week to around 20 days, by state | Training rules are set by each state under PSARA |
| Private security course under Skill India | Those wanting a recognised certificate | Weeks | Often free |
| Fire safety and first-aid certificates | Guards aiming for better posts | Days | Low cost |
Join only licensed agencies. Ask for the agency’s PSARA licence, a written offer and payslips. Unlicensed agencies often pay late or less than the minimum wage.
How to start
- Get fit and keep a clean record — police verification is usual.
- Complete authorised guard training.
- Join a licensed agency with written terms.
- Add fire-safety, first-aid and CCTV skills.
- Apply for supervisor roles after a few years.
Where it can lead
- Security guard
- Head guard or CCTV operator
- Security supervisor or officer
- Manager, or your own licensed agency
Protect yourself
- Never pay a ‘joining fee’ to an agency.
- Never work for an agency that won’t show its PSARA licence.
- Never accept wages below your state’s minimum wage.

Learn online, free
Online learning helps you understand. Only practice makes you skilled. Use free government lessons alongside your training.
- Before you join: learn what a security guard’s job and shifts involve.
- While you train: search Skill India Digital Hub for security courses to revise the theory alongside your training.
- After you qualify: fire safety and first aid drills must be practised in person.
Can’t afford training?
Money should not stop you. These routes cost little or nothing:
- Skill India (PMKVY): look for a short course such as Unarmed Security Guard at a Skill India centre near you, usually at no cost. Search on skillindiadigital.gov.in.
- DDU-GKY: for poor rural youth, with training linked to a job at the end. Ask at your block office or State Rural Livelihood Mission.
- Licensed agencies: join only agencies licensed under your state’s private security rules. A real agency never asks you to pay for a job.
