Engineering — Diploma, JEE and state entrance

Engineers design and build roads, power, machines and software. There are two doors: a low-cost polytechnic diploma after 10th, or a degree after 12th through JEE or a state entrance exam.

What this field is

Engineering covers civil, mechanical, electrical, electronics, computer science and more. A diploma makes you a junior engineer or technician; a degree makes you an engineer.

For families who cannot afford four years of fees after 12th, the diploma route is realistic: you can work after three years, or continue to a degree through lateral entry.

It suits you if:

  • You like maths and science, or practical technical work.
  • You enjoy solving problems.
  • You can study steadily for several years.

Choose AICTE-approved institutes and government colleges where possible. Fees at private colleges vary widely — compare placement records, not advertisements.

How to start

  1. In school, build strong basics in maths and science.
  2. After 10th, consider your state’s polytechnic admission.
  3. After 12th (PCM), register for JEE Main and your state’s engineering entrance.
  4. Apply for scholarships every year.
  5. During the course, do internships and practical projects.

Where it can lead

  1. Diploma or B.Tech student
  2. Junior engineer or graduate engineer
  3. Project or site engineer
  4. Manager, consultant or your own engineering firm

Government routes: state electricity boards, railways and public sector companies recruit diploma holders and graduates through their own exams and GATE.

Check before you pay

  • Never join a college without checking AICTE approval.
  • Never pay ‘management seat’ agents.
  • Never take a large loan without comparing placements.

Committed students who cannot pay can ask us about sponsors, and check the National Scholarship Portal every year.
