Commerce, Accounting and CA — B.Com and Chartered Accountancy
Every business needs people who can keep its accounts, file its tax and check its money honestly. A B.Com degree gets you into this work; Chartered Accountancy takes you to the top of it. Many students do both together.

What this field is
B.Com (Bachelor of Commerce) is a university degree. You study accounting, business law, economics, tax and management, and receive a degree that opens accounts jobs, bank exams, an MBA or an M.Com.
CA (Chartered Accountancy) is a professional qualification from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), not a university degree. Only a Chartered Accountant can sign company audits and practise as a CA. The subjects overlap with B.Com, so the two support each other. Related professions are Cost and Management Accountant (CMA) and Company Secretary (CS).
M.Com (Master of Commerce) is a two-year master’s degree after B.Com. It goes deeper into accounting, finance, tax and research. It is the usual route to teaching commerce in colleges (through UGC NET or your state’s SET) and to a PhD, and it also helps for finance and banking jobs.
Why many students do both B.Com and CA: CA is hard and often takes several attempts. A B.Com finished alongside means you always hold a degree, whatever happens with CA.
It suits you if:
- You are good with numbers and careful with detail.
- You are honest and disciplined — people will trust you with their money.
- For CA: you can keep going through hard exams, sometimes more than once.
Four routes — choose the one that fits you
| Route | Who it suits | Time | Where it leads |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. B.Com → accounting work | Any 12th pass; commerce students find it easiest | 3 years | Accounts assistant, Tally and GST work, bank and government exams, MBA |
| 2. CA after 12th, with B.Com alongside | Strong 12th students ready for a demanding course | CA usually 3½–5 years; B.Com by distance or open learning in parallel | Chartered Accountant, with a degree as a safety net |
| 3. B.Com first, then CA by Direct Entry | B.Com graduates with at least 55% (other graduates need 60%) | 3 years, then CA Intermediate, articleship and Final | Chartered Accountant — CA Foundation is skipped |
| 4. B.Com, then M.Com | B.Com graduates who love the subject or want to teach | 3 + 2 years | College lecturer (with UGC NET or SET), PhD and research, senior finance and banking roles |
Doing B.Com by distance? Choose a university approved for open and distance learning by the UGC. A degree from an unapproved institution may not be accepted for jobs or for CA Direct Entry.
CA stages under the ICAI scheme
| Stage | What it is | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation | Entry level after 12th, four papers | About 6 months |
| Direct Entry | Graduates skip Foundation: 55% for commerce, 60% for others. CMA Intermediate or CS Executive pass also qualifies. | — |
| Intermediate | Two groups of papers | About 1 year |
| Articleship | Practical training under a practising CA, with a stipend | 2 years |
| Final | Advanced papers, then ICAI membership | 6–12 months |
How to start
- Decide your route: B.Com only, CA with B.Com alongside, B.Com first and CA later, or B.Com then M.Com.
- Join B.Com at a government or aided college if you can — fees are lower.
- Learn Tally, GST and Excel early so you can earn part-time — see Digital and office work.
- For CA, read the current scheme and register on the ICAI website.
- Keep your B.Com marks above 55% so Direct Entry stays open to you.
- Choose your CA articleship firm carefully — it shapes your career.
- Apply for scholarships every year.
Where it can lead
- Accounts assistant or CA student
- Accountant, or articled assistant — earning a stipend
- Senior accountant, tax consultant, or Chartered Accountant
- Finance manager, CFO, or your own accounting firm
M.Com route: M.Com → UGC NET or state SET → Assistant Professor, or a Junior Research Fellowship for a PhD. See Research and university teaching for NET marks, age limits and fellowship details.
Check first
- Never join a distance course from a university without UGC approval.
- Never pay coaching centres that “guarantee” a CA pass.
- Never falsify accounts or tax returns for anyone — honesty is the whole profession.
Committed students who cannot pay can ask us about sponsors, and check the National Scholarship Portal every year.
