Fisheries, aquaculture and marine biology
India is one of the world’s largest fish producers, and seafood is a major export. Fisheries offers every kind of route: a degree, technical jobs on farms and in processing plants, research careers, and a business of your own with government support.

What this field is
Fisheries science covers fish farming (aquaculture), fish health, hatcheries, nutrition, processing, quality control and fisheries management. The professional degree is the B.F.Sc (Bachelor of Fisheries Science), taught at fisheries colleges and universities.
Marine biology is the study of life in the sea. It is more academic: usually B.Sc Zoology (or a related science), then M.Sc Marine Biology, then research.
This field is not only for coastal families. Inland fish farming in ponds, tanks and reservoirs is growing across India, including Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Many Muslim families on the coasts of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat and Bengal already work in fishing — this guide shows their children how to move into technical, export and degree-level work.
It suits you if:
- You like biology, water and outdoor work.
- Your family already works in fishing or farming.
- You want a route that can become your own business.
- You are curious about the sea and nature.
Routes, time and cost
| Route | Who it suits | Time | Leads to |
|---|---|---|---|
| B.F.Sc (Bachelor of Fisheries Science) | 12th with science (usually Biology; check each university). State university quota, plus the ICAR all-India quota | 4 years | Fisheries officer, hatchery manager, quality controller, bank field officer, M.F.Sc |
| B.Sc Zoology → M.Sc Marine Biology | 12th with Biology | 3 + 2 years | Research projects, CSIR/ICAR institutes, teaching, Ph.D |
| Short skill courses — aquaculture worker, hatchery or fish-seed technician | Anyone; often free at fisheries departments, Krishi Vigyan Kendras and skill centres | Days to a few months | Farm and hatchery jobs; first step to your own unit |
| Seafood processing and quality work | 10th or 12th; food or fisheries training helps | Training on the job | Processing, grading, packing and QC jobs in export plants |
| Your own unit with PMMSY support | Farmers, fishers, SHGs, FFPOs, entrepreneurs | Project-based | Ponds, biofloc, RAS, cage culture, seaweed, ornamental fish, cold chain, fish retail |
Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) gives government assistance of 40% of project cost for general category and 60% for women, SC and ST beneficiaries; the rest can be bank-financed. Apply through your district fisheries office. Check that the scheme and your activity are open this year before you plan — Indian Bank PMMSY page.
How to start
- Visit your district fisheries office or nearest Krishi Vigyan Kendra and ask about free training.
- If you are in 11th–12th with Biology, list the fisheries colleges in your state and their admission dates.
- Work or volunteer for a season on a fish farm, hatchery or processing plant to see the real work.
- If you want a business, start small, keep records and then apply for PMMSY support. See also Food and small manufacturing.
- Join or form a fish farmers’ group (SHG or FFPO) — groups get credit and buyers more easily.
Where it can lead
- Trainee or farm worker
- Technician or supervisor — hatchery, farm or processing plant
- Fisheries graduate — officer, manager or quality lead
- Your own farm, hatchery or seafood business — or research and teaching (see Research and university teaching)
Government jobs: state fisheries departments recruit fisheries graduates as fisheries officers and inspectors; banks hire them as agriculture field officers.
Be careful
- Never invest in a pond or biofloc unit without proper training and a tested water source.
- Never pay an agent who promises a PMMSY subsidy for a fee — apply through official offices.
- Never go to sea or work on a fishing vessel without safety gear and a proper contract.
- Disease can wipe out a crop — learn biosecurity before you scale up.
“It is He who subjected the sea for you to eat from it tender meat.” — Qur’an 16:14
