What this field is
Retail sells to customers directly; trading buys in bulk and sells to shops. Success depends on choosing the right goods, controlling stock and cash, and keeping customers’ trust.
Many traders begin by working in an established shop to learn buying, pricing and accounts.
It suits you if:
- You enjoy dealing with people.
- You are good with numbers and careful with money.
- You can be patient while the business grows.
Routes, time and cost
| Step | What it involves | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Learn the trade | Work in a shop or with a wholesaler | 6–12 months is ideal |
| Register | Udyam; local shop and establishment registration | Requirements vary by state |
| GST | Required once turnover passes the limit, or for most online selling | Check current limits with a tax adviser |
| Accounts | Daily cash book, stock register, invoices | See Digital and office work |
Starting capital without riba: start with small stock bought from savings, take credit only from suppliers on clear terms, or form a partnership with a trusted investor.

Where it can lead
- Shop assistant
- Stall or small shop owner
- Several outlets or wholesale
- Distributor for brands
Honest trade
- Never cheat in weight, measure or quality (Qur’an 83:1–3).
- Never hide defects from a buyer.
- Never sell goods you know are fake or stolen.
