What this field is
Hospitality covers cooking (commis chef to head chef), baking, food service, housekeeping and front office.
It is hard work with long hours, but skilled cooks are always needed and can later start catering or a food business.
It suits you if:
- You enjoy cooking and serving people.
- You can work long and busy shifts.
- You want a skill that travels with you.
Routes, time and cost
| Route | Who it suits | Time | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| ITI Food Production | 10th pass — check your ITI | 1 year | Low at a government ITI |
| Short course — commis chef, baker, food & beverage service | Those who need to earn sooner | Weeks to months | Often free under Skill India |
| B.Sc Hospitality and Hotel Administration via NCHM JEE | 12th pass with English; no age limit | 3 years | Lower at government Institutes of Hotel Management |

Learn online, free
Online learning helps you understand. Only practice makes you skilled. Use free government lessons alongside your training.
- Before you join: watch lessons on kitchen work and hotel jobs to see what the day looks like.
- While you train: on Bharat Skills, use the Food Production (General) trade material, including food hygiene.
- After you qualify: learn new dishes online, but kitchen speed and hygiene habits come from working in a real kitchen.
Can’t afford training?
Money should not stop you. These routes cost little or nothing:
- Skill India (PMKVY): look for a short course such as Commis Chef or Food and Beverage Service Steward at a Skill India centre near you, usually at no cost. Search on skillindiadigital.gov.in.
- Government ITI: fees at government ITIs are very low, and many states give extra support. Choose the Food Production trade.
- DDU-GKY: for poor rural youth, with training linked to a job at the end. Ask at your block office or State Rural Livelihood Mission.

Applying costs nothing. Never pay an agent to get you into a government scheme.
