No computer at home? Many community centres, libraries and training centres offer computer time. Start there before buying one.
Six steps to your first office job
- Computer basics: typing (aim for 30 words a minute), email, file handling and internet safety.
- Spreadsheets: Excel or Google Sheets — formulas, tables and simple reports.
- Accounting basics and Tally: vouchers, ledgers, invoices, bank reconciliation, and GST entries.
- Practise on real data: keep accounts for a family shop or a local trader for a few months.
- Work on English: clear email writing and polite phone calls open many more jobs.
- Apply: register on the National Career Service and approach traders, CA firms and small companies near you.
Proof of skill employers ask for
- Certificate in Tally and GST from a recognised institute or Skill India course.
- Practical test: enter a month of sales and purchases in Tally, reconcile a bank statement, and prepare a simple GST summary. The SkilledMuslim practical test follows these tasks.
- Typing speed and a sample spreadsheet you built.
- A reference from a shop or firm whose accounts you kept.
Your five-year picture
- Year 1 · Accounts assistant: first job, Tally and GST every day.
- Years 2–3 · Accountant or GST executive: full books for a business; start a part-time B.Com.
- Years 4–5 · Senior accountant: manage juniors, or serve several small businesses as an independent bookkeeper.
- Beyond: accounts manager, or study further for CA, CMA or an MBA in finance.
This path suits people who cannot do heavy physical work, and many roles can later be done from home.
Money step
- Use your new skills on your own money: a monthly budget in a spreadsheet.
- Save a fixed share of every salary before spending.
- Keep a goal for your own laptop and further study.
Honesty rules
- Never make false entries or fake bills, even if asked.
- Never share a client’s passwords, OTPs or data.
- Never pay for “work-from-home data entry” jobs — they are almost always scams.
“When you contract a debt for a fixed term, write it down.” — Qur’an 2:282

- Before you join: try free lessons in typing, spreadsheets and email to see how you find it.
- While you train: on Bharat Skills, use the COPA trade material; Skill India Digital Hub and SWAYAM have computer courses too.
- After you qualify: this work can be learnt mostly online. Build real practice files and keep improving your typing speed.
Can’t afford training?
Money should not stop you. These routes cost little or nothing:
- Government ITI: fees at government ITIs are very low, and many states give extra support. Choose the one-year COPA trade.
- Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS): very low-cost local courses, open even if you left school early. Search “Jan Shikshan Sansthan” with your district name.
