Already an ITI Electrician? You have a head start — most AC faults are electrical. A short AC course adds the refrigeration side quickly.

Six steps to a skilled AC technician

  1. Learn the basics (2–4 weeks). Watch introductory videos on how a split AC works, electrical safety and the refrigeration cycle. Help a local technician if you can.
  2. Join a course. Apply to the 2-year ITI course through your state’s admission portal, or find a short course on Skill India Digital.
  3. Master the core skills. Electrical basics, copper tubing and brazing, refrigerants and their safe handling, window and split AC installation, refrigerators, then commercial systems in year two.
  4. Do a paid apprenticeship with an AC dealer, service centre or facilities company through the Apprenticeship India portal.
  5. Join a brand or service company to learn inverter ACs and earn steady pay with travel allowance.
  6. Move up to commercial systems — chillers, VRF and central AC, cold storage — where pay is higher and work is more stable.

Proof of skill employers ask for

  • Certificate: ITI Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technician (NCVT or SCVT), or a recognised short-course certificate.
  • Practical test: install a split AC, braze a joint, pressure-test, vacuum and charge refrigerant, and find an electrical fault. The SkilledMuslim practical test follows these tasks.
  • Tools you use confidently: manifold gauge, vacuum pump, brazing kit, flaring and swaging tools, clamp meter.
  • Work log: date, place, type of unit and job, and your role.

Where the first income comes from

  • AC brands’ authorised service centres, which hire trained technicians every summer.
  • Dealers and installers who fit new ACs in homes and offices.
  • Facility management companies that maintain malls, hospitals and office buildings.
  • Cold storage and food companies, which need refrigeration technicians year-round.
  • Gulf openings: HVAC technicians are in steady demand, usually with 2–3 years’ experience and a trade test. Apply only through licensed agents listed on eMigrate.

Your five-year picture

  1. Years 1–2 · Trainee: ITI or short course, helping on summer jobs.
  2. Year 3 · Technician: apprenticeship, then a service-centre or installer job.
  3. Year 4 · Senior technician: commercial and central systems, leading a small team.
  4. Year 5 and beyond · Own service business: AMC contracts with shops, offices and clinics; hire and train helpers.

Side routes: the CITS course to become an ITI instructor, or a diploma in mechanical engineering.

Money step

  • Save in the busy summer months for the quieter winter ones.
  • Buy your gauge, vacuum pump and brazing kit from savings, not on EMI.
  • Keep a separate goal for your own service van and tools.

Safety rules

  • Never work on a unit without isolating the power and testing it dead.
  • Never braze near flammable refrigerant or without good ventilation.
  • Never vent refrigerant into the air — recover it properly.
  • Never mount outdoor units on walls or ledges without a harness.
  • Never skip gloves and goggles when handling refrigerant.

Learn online, free

Online learning helps you understand. Only practice makes you skilled. Use free government lessons alongside your training.

  • Before you join: watch how air conditioners and fridges work, and what a service visit involves.
  • While you train: on Bharat Skills, use the Refrigeration and Air Conditioner Technician trade material and mock tests.
  • After you qualify: learn new inverter ACs and refrigerants. Gas charging and brazing must be practised under a trainer.

Can’t afford training?

Money should not stop you. These routes cost little or nothing:

  • Government ITI: fees at government ITIs are very low, and many states give extra support. Choose the Refrigeration and Air Conditioner Technician trade.
  • Skill India (PMKVY): look for a short course such as Field Technician – Air Conditioner at a Skill India centre near you, usually at no cost. Search on skillindiadigital.gov.in.
  • Apprenticeship with a stipend: after ITI or a short course, an apprenticeship lets you learn in a real company and receive a monthly stipend. Search on apprenticeshipindia.gov.in.

Applying costs nothing. Never pay an agent to get you into a government scheme.
